African Union prepared to celebrate Africa Day on May 25th
Addis Ababa, 22 May 2011 – Africa Day will be celebrated on Wednesday 25 May 2011 all over the continent and in the Diaspora, under the theme: “Accelerating Youth Empowerment for Sustainable Development’’.
The African Union will joint the rest of the continent to observe the Africa Day on 25 May 2011. Several activities to mark the Day have been organised at the headquarters of the African Union Commission (AUC) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The Africa Day at the African Union headquarters will be celebrated in the presence of the Chairperson of the African Union (AU), Mr. Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, President of the Republic of Equatorial, the Prime Ministers of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mr. Jean Ping, some African Heads of State and Government, Ministers and other high officials attending the Africa- India Summit which ends on the morning of the 25 of May. Participants will also include the Ambassadors of AU Member States, partners, heads of international organizations, representatives of Civil Society Organisations, staff members of the AUC and members of the media, amongst others.
A reception will be offered to all the participants by the African Union in the Congo Hall and in the court-yard (outside the AU Conference Centre). Amongst the dishes to be served will be the national dishes: from all regions of Africa. In the course of the reception, two cakes prepared for the occasion will be cut by the AU chairperson at the Congo Hall on the one hand and the Deputy Chairperson of the AUC, Mr. Erastus Mwencha, will cut the symbolic cake in the court-yard.
A cultural event will crown the ceremony marking the Africa Day on 25 May 2011, at the African Union headquarters.
