Interpol Indicts UK Based Fraudster
The recent crackdown of fraudster Bai Fonti Fofanah, who doubles as Managing Director of Base I Fonti Shipping and Removal Limited tests case conducts of the judiciary on issues of international fraud.
In 2008, a business woman called Madam Fanta Amad Jah, bought 70 cartons of school bags, beds, deep freezers, musical sets and other accessories in London and handed same to one Bai Fonti Fofanah, (already charged with fraud by the police) for shipment to Freetown.
That Madam Fanta was to pay Bai Fonti for the sum of 1,050 pounds for the 70 Cartons upon the safe arrival and delivery of the goods in Freetown.
She furthered that after conclusion of arrangement with the accused, she traveled to Freetown to check for and collect her goods, but was informed by Fonti’s agent in Freetown, Abdul Razak that he only received 61 cartons plus other accessories and not 70 cartons at all.
“When I called Fonti in London to report to him of the shortage, he told me that it will be sorted out later and therefore asked his agent Razak, to give me 20 of the 61 cartons received,” Madam Fanta said.
That after receiving the 20 cartoons she never accessed the rest.
She further said that Fonti refused to give her the goods owing to a standoff between the two of them, adding that, “Fonti’s mother has been trying to resolve the issue but could not.
“To my greatest surprise” Fanta said, “when Fonti finally came to Freetown, I called him and he told me that he had auctioned my goods without my knowledge.”
“I straight away complained to the police and he was picked up by Interpol officers for statement making.”
She also told this press that Fonti initially denied transacting any form of business with her, but upon findings, confessed to have auctioned the goods because they were already damaged.
He was bailed and he agreed settling the issue out of the police, but failed woefully.
According to Madam Fanta, the estimated cost for goods defrauded is Le 58,915,000.
In his path, Bai Fonti Fofanah acknowledged receiving goods from Madam Fanta, but claimed he did not pay a cent for shipment and custom duties.
He said Madam Fanta did collect 20 cartoons from his agent in Abdul Razak, but afterwards disappeared for two years.
This, to him, was what caused him gets rid of the goods.
Abdul Razak was also contacted and he confirms receiving 61 cartons of school bags and the other items.
He said Fonti told him Madam Fanta is the owner of the goods, but ordered to give her just 20 cartons and keep the remaining goods until he comes back from London.
“I obeyed Fonti’s instruction and did exactly what he told me to do,” Abdul said.
The police have confirmed sending the case and inquiry file to the court for trial.
