SLBC’s pleasant surprise in Ethiopia

Certainly, the tremendous and assiduous efforts poured in by the Government of Sierra Leone and the Ministry of Information and Communications in particular, under the able leadership of President Ernest Bai Koroma and Hon. Ibrahim Ben Kargbo respectively, in the transformation of the former state-owned Sierra Leone Broadcasting Service into a public broadcaster now called the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC), are paying off huge dividends.  (Photo: Sheka Tarawalie, Sierra Leone’s Deputy Minister of Information & Communications)

Through the ingenuity of the institution’s Director General, Elvis Gbanabom Hallowell, who has wasted no time in not only changing the physical looks of the offices and restructuring of personnel, the television station has been upgraded into a satellite status. And the effects are reverberating: Sierra Leoneans in Ethiopia are now watching SLBC TV live. I had a pleasant surprise on Saturday 16th April when at Ambassador Andrew Bangali’s residence the television was turned on and I saw Daniel Mbompa Turay interviewing John Baimba Sesay of NRA. Later at Information Attaché Abdul Karim Koroma’s residence I watched Rose Konima Stevens’ ‘View Finder’.

I am now in Uganda; and I’ve been meeting Sierra Leoneans here. One of the messages to them is that home is nearer now through SLBC TV. They should also soon start enjoying Salone TV. It’s the same message I’ll take to Rwanda, Kenya, and Ghana.
