Sierra Leone attends high-profile meeting in Saudi Arabia

Sierra Leone participated in the preparatory meeting to the 12th Islamic Summit held in Sham El-Sheik, Arab Republic of Egypt in the first half of the year.  

Sierra Leone was represented by its  Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Permanent Representative to the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), H.E Wusu B. Munu and Head of Chancery/Minister Counsellor, Mr. Ibrahim S. Yilla.   

The meeting which was held at the OIC headquarters in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia from 12th -14th February, 2011, discussed the draft agenda for the Islamic Council of Foreign Ministers (ICFM) and Summit meetings scheduled to be held in Sham El- Sheik later this year.   (Photo: A view of the Conference Hall) 

The meeting comprised of Permanent Representatives of the OIC, Experts from OIC Member States and officials of the OIC secretariat.

 The meeting discussed amongst others the following issues: Political issues affecting OIC Member States, combating terrorism, combating defamation of divine religions of facing Islamphobia, the OIC ten-year programme of action, poverty alleviation and cooperation in trade, tourism and transportation. 

In his opening remarks to the meeting, the Secretary General of the OIC, Professor Ekmeleddin Ishanoglo extended heartfelt thanks and appreciation to H.E President Abdoulaye Wade of Senegal, Chairman of the 11th Session of the Islamic Conference for the laudable efforts and dedicated stewardship contributed over the past three years in support of Islamic action. 

The meeting then heard the report of the outgoing Chair, Senegal which was immediately followed by the assumption of the Chair by the Arab Republic of Egypt for the 12th Islamic Summit. The draft agenda for both the ICFM and the Islamic Summit and Communiqué were exhaustively discussed. 

The Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) is the second largest inter-governmental organization after the United Nations, according to the OIC website, and it has membership of 57 states spread over four continents. 

Sierra Leone became a member of the OIC in 1972 under the Presidency of Dr. Siaka P. Stevens.
