In this regard, the Director of the Open Government Initiative (OGI) in Sierra Leone, Khadija Sesay on Saturday landed in Brussels from Freetown and was immediately driven to Amsterdam in Holland where she held a briefing session with executive members of the Sierra Leone Central Union in the Netherland to sensitise them on the activities of the Agency and to also prepare their minds as the OGI will be a organising a Town Hall meeting in which every Sierra Leonean in Mainland Europe will have the opportunity to meet with His Excellency the President, some Cabinet Ministers and other government functionaries and are free to ask questions relating to the progress and governance of the country..
The OGI, according to Miss Sesay is the brain-child of President Ernest Bai Koroma as a fulfilment of one of his election promises to bring the government closer to the people.
Miss Sesay assured the audience that the OGI operates independently and has succeeded in bringing the three arms of government (Executive, Legislative and Judiciary) closer to the people by organising Town Hall meetings in all the Fourteen Districts in Sierra Leone in which ordinary citizens had the opportunity to openly ask questions to Parliamentarians, Ministers, the President, the Chief Justice etc.
She observed that since there are thousands of Sierra Leoneans scattered all over the world and considering the pivotal roles they are playing back home, it is but absolutely necessary to also accord them the opportunity to meet with their President and dialogue.
Responding, the newly elected Chairman of the Sierra Leone Central Union, Mohamed Telisme Bangura expressed delight on the proposed visit of His Excellency the President and said Sierra Leoneans in mainland Europe have long been yearning for such an opportunity to meet and dialogue with their Head of State.
The OGI Director, Khadija Sesay will also be meeting with the Sierra Leone Community executive in Paris, France and Antwerp, Belgium on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively on the same sensitisation drive.
