Equatorial Guinea and Nigeria in finals

Equatorial Guinea and Nigeria will both represent Africa at next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup 2011 in Germany after reaching the final of the CAF African Women’s Championship in Daveyton, South Africa, on Thursday, 11 November 2010.

While Equatorial Guinea beat South Africa 3-1 to reach the finals for the first time in their history, Nigeria won 5-1 against Cameroon to qualify for a sixth successive time

“We’re all very excited about Equatorial Guinea’s first ever appearance at a Women’s World Cup. This success deserves recognition, coming as it does after an extremely impressive footballing performance against strong teams like Cameroon, Algeria, Ghana and South Africa.

Newcomers always add flair to the World Cup,” said OC President Steffi Jones, who also congratulated both the Equatorial Guinean and Nigerian associations in personal letters.

Jones went on to describe Germany’s “huge respect for the Nigerian team, who are yet to miss out on a Women’s World Cup. It wouldn’t surprise me if Nigeria remains in the tournament right to the very end, just like they did at the recent U-20 Women’s World Cup. The friendly match between Nigeria and Germany on 25 November in Leverkusen is going to be a real treat for the fans”.

As well as Equatorial Guinea and Nigeria, Australia, Korea DPR, England, France, Japan, Canada, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden and hosts Germany have already secured qualification for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2011.

Steffi Jones will soon be writing personal welcome letters to the three remaining qualifiers, which will be determined as follows:

South America (CONMEBOL):

Two teams

Qualifying: South American Women’s Championship from 4-21 November 2010 in Ecuador.

The remaining FIFA World Cup spot will be decided by a play-off between USA (third-placed team from the CONCACAF zone) and Italy (fifth-placed UEFA team). The matches will be played on 20 and 27 November 2010, with Italy hosting the first leg.

Furthermore, the OC President, along with a FIFA delegation, will visit each of the 15 qualified nations between December 2010 and March 2011 as part of a welcome tour. Jones’ first stop will be in Sydney on 8 December.

The draw for the FIFA Women’s World Cup will take place on November 29, 2010, at Frankfurt’s Congress Center.
