More crooked thinking …

Here are quotations from Tuesday’s edition of two newspapers.

When the SLPP was in power it appointed SLPP supporters from the north and the rest of the country in various capacities but when the APC is in power it should by force appoint SLPP.” Paul Kamara as Makuta in for-di-people newspaper’s “Mama Salone en pikin.”

Columnist Santigie Kamara writing in the Standard Times newspaper suggests that the SLPP lied when it claimed that its offices were attacked and vandalized in March 2009 and its women raped in the attack.

What absolute nonsense and blatant display of lack of professional integrity on both journalists. One could sympathize with Santigie Kamara who is not only a novice in the profession but one who may be reechoing his master’s voice. How could anyone deny that there were two vicious attacks on the SLPP headquarters March 2009? The commission that was set up to investigate the matter came up with the ridiculous conclusion that although the women had their human rights physically violated it could not establish the charge of rape because it lacked the facilities to do so. Even allowing that the women were not raped is it not degrading, disgraceful and demoralsising that they were assaulted at all? Yet Santigie Kamara does not see it that way but suggests that the incident was a fabrication on the part of the SLPP. The worst part of his article was his attempt to describe how both the opposition and the government operate in developed democracies.

He did not give one instance of David Cameron then the opposition conservative leader ever praising the actions of the then Labour Prime Minister Gordon Brown. He doesn’t even appear to be aware that the Republicans in the US Congress deliberately opposed or delayed President Obama’s popular policies like health and welfare insurance for every American, financial regulations or bailouts. What is he chasing I wonder, a posting to the yet-to-be-opened Sierra Leone Embassy in Brazil?

Here we have the veteran journalist and former Secretary of State in the government of the NPRC succumbing to the description of “crooked thinking.” Because the opening paragraph of his three page meandering of mama Salone en pikin was built on a false premise I did not bother to read the rest of the story.

It is true that the SLPP appointed its supporters from the north and all parts of the country in accordance to its motto, ONE COUNTRY, ONE PEOPLE.”. That was the legacy that the APC inherited which it has squandered for political gain. On what basis does Paul Kamara assume that the SLPP desires its members to be appointed to positions under the APC? Has he been blind to the repeated press releases from the SLPP executive admonishing its members not to allow themselves to yield to the temptation of jobs in an APC administration? Would the veteran newspaper editor and publisher tell his readers that he is unaware of this columnist’s repeated declarations that the SLPP IS NOT ASKING THE APC for appointments for SLPP members?

What we have is to condemn the appointment of ministers and other officials almost from one from one region of the country that is the north. That is what we have often referred to as a deliberate regional divide and polarization. Surely there are active APC supporters in Kono, Kenema, Bo, Kailahun and Moyamba districts. We have never advocated for what would tantamount to a one party government. The for-di-people newspaper publisher would do well to live to his boast, that “fdp stands for your right to know the truth’ rather than indulging in fabrications about the SLPP.
