Sierra Leoneans in Diaspora complain of rampant thieving at Water Quay
Dozens of Sierra Leoneans living in Belgium, Holland, France and Germany who are mostly businessmen engaged in exporting goods to Sierra Leone, have complained bitterly on the rampant pilfering and vandalization of their goods and vehicles at the Queen Elizabeth 11 Quay in Freetown. The situation has become so unbearable that they have resolved to stop using the Sierra Leone Port for export. They said they rather use Ports of the neighbouring countries notably Guinea or Liberia, than using the Sierra Leone Port if the barbaric act is not halted immediately.
Ibrahim Conteh, a Sierra Leonean residing in Holland who’s been in the business of exporting second-hand cars to Sierra Leone for over a decade now, stormed the Sierra Leone Embassy in Brussels to bitterly complain on how all the five vehicles he recently exported to Freetown were vandalised.
“All the side mirrors, reserve tyres, spare tools etc. were removed from the vehicles. What is more annoying, when my younger brother went to clear the vehicles from the Quay, the same parts removed from the vehicles were sold to him inside the same Quay. This means the thieves are inside the Port. This is very discouraging and heart-troubling”, he stated angrily.
Conteh’s predicament was further collaborated by another Sierra Leonean who experienced similar fate.
Abdulai Musa in France explained that he exported a truck load of assorted household furniture to Freetown last month, only to learn that the locks of the truck were damaged and almost every item in the truck stolen. “I will never export anything for now until the situation is normalised”, Musa said.
