Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission to Select Preferred Alternative at Georgia Meeting

Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission to Select Preferred Alternative at Georgia Meeting

The Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission (GGCHCC) will select a Preferred Alternative at its fourth 2010 quarterly meeting in Brunswick, GA, at 9 a.m., on November 19.  The meeting, open to the public, will be at the Ritz Theatre, 1530 Newcastle St.

The Preferred Alternative, or management framework for operating the Corridor over the next 10 years, is a major component of the General Management Plan.  Its selection will be based on public comments received about the three Preliminary Alternatives that were announced in September.  They are:  Preliminary Alternative A,  the “No-Action Alternative”, which is a continuation of the status quo, and is required to be considered by federal law; Preliminary Alternative B, “Document to Sustain and Inform about Gullah/Geechee People and Culture”; and Preliminary Alternative C, “Empower Gullah/Geechee People and Perpetuate and Sustain the Culture”.

The preferred alternative could be one of the three alternatives that have been developed, a combination of ideas from more than one of the alternatives, or an entirely new alternative.  The deadline for submitting responses is October 26, 2010.
