Schlenker @ 51
One of the oldest schools in Port Loko District, Schlenker Secondary School, established by the Church of England on 10th October 1959 by Reverend Schlenker, past Sunday turned 51 years.
To commemorate the day, a thanksgiving service was held yesterday at the St. James Church and a dance at the Bai Bureh Memorial Hall. Both events were graced by old and present pupils and distinguished personalities from various walks of life.
It was the dream of the founders of the school to unite the people of the district by bringing together pupils from various parts of the country to acquire knowledge.
Schlenker Secondary School has attained academic excellence for the past forty years as the school has produced eminent Sierra Leoneans like the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, Issa Raymond Kabia; former Minister of Transport and Aviation, Ibrahim Kemoh Sesay; Chief Immigration Officer, Alpha Kholifa Koroma; Principal, Schlenker Secondary School, Chernor Sahid Kamara, former Inspector General of Police, Brima Acha Kamara and Port Loko District Council Chief Administrator, Mohamed S. Kargbo among others.
In an exclusive interview with the Principal, Chernor Sahid Kamara, he disclosed that both old and present pupils of the school yesterday converged at the St. James Church, Anglican Diocese of Freetown, in the center of Port Loko town, to commemorate the day.
C.S. Kamara, who has served the school for the past twenty years, recalled that the school complex was used to house former combatants for disarmament and that during the period the school was vandalized.
“The entire boarding home, comprising five buildings, school hall and library were destroyed. What is even disheartening is that the National Commission for Social Action (NaCSA) awarded a grant of Le 500,000,000 to certain individuals for rehabilitation of the school which never materialized,” C.S. Kamara lamented.
He appealed to the Ministry of Education, Board of Governors and stakeholders to institute an investigation into the matter adding, “Schlenker is the light of Port Loko that has produced prominent personalities that are today contributing to national development.”
C.S. Kamara acclaimed the Port Loko District Council Chairman, Ahmid Minurr Fofanah and the Chief Administrator for their relentless efforts for the speedy rehabilitation of the school and called on government, NGOs and other parastatals to assistance in the refurbishing the school.
He also called on old students to work assiduously to lift the school to higher academic heights.
