Heroes Welcome Awaits Ambassador Yambasu
A grand reception awaits popular and seasoned politician John Yambasu, who has just been confirmed as Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to the Soviet Union.
A high-level advanced team from members of the United Kingdom Branch of the All People’s Congress (APC) as well as friends and relatives are already heading for Moscow to prepare the ground to welcome one of Sierra Leone’s most respectable public personalities.
“We just want to give him the honour and respect he deserves as a great man – one who has made tremendous sacrifices not only for his party, but the country as a whole,” said a member of the opposition who also described Yambasu’s appointment as ‘a great choice’ for the people of Sierra Leone.
Ambassador Yambasu, who resigned his post as Chairman of the All People’s Congress Eastern Region few months ago, will be badly missed by members of his party and colleagues in the opposition as well as the youths who see him as a role model in the political arena.
In Russia, Ambassador Yambasu is expected to raise the profile of Sierra Leone in that part of the world.
He is one of the few politicians who is highly respected and influential not only within his ruling APC party, but also amongst members of the opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) as well as the People’s Movement for Democratic Change (PMDC).
This was perhaps the reason why he had massive support from them when he bade farewell to His Excellency the President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma at State House.
Before his departure from Freetown, there were concerns by members of the ruling party that they were losing one of their finest political crowd-pullers, but the Ambassador had dismissed such fears saying: “I know my people will miss me but let them be rest assured that I will always be with them in body and soul.”
Ambassador Yambasu said he has been asked to perform a national duty by His Excellency President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma and he is happy such a national responsibility had been entrusted onto him.
He assured Sierra Leoneans that he will do his utmost best to raise the image and profile of the government and people of Sierra Leone.
A veteran journalist described Ambassador Yambasu as a mixer, a successful politician and a man who would hardly hurt a fly.
