Revealed – Librarian in Corruption Scam!
Leaked information connecting the Deputy Chief of Sierra Leone Library said 46,650 books donated to Sierra Leone by Children International was diverted and sold to Guinea.
Investigation by this press exposed Sallieu Turay (in middle of photo) and people unknown’s sad over-indulgences in the misappropriation of containers of books presented to school going children by ‘Children International’ in the United States.
Sources say four containers of books were shipped into Sierra Leone for distributions to 300 schools in Sierra Leone.
The Deputy Chief Librarian, Sallieu Turay, was in charge of the distribution of the books, but unreasonably converted 70% of total number of books to his use or benefit.
It could be recalled that Sallieu has a post graduate diploma in library studies and a master’s degree in education and administration.
Findings say he was refused pursuing his master’s in library studies because of poor performance after completion of the forenamed diploma.
Reflections must be drawn to humanitarian organizations supporting poor African countries in the area of free book supplies.
Book Trust in the United Kingdom and Children International in the United States are two major contributors in the enhancement of text books for use by schools in Sierra Leone.
The shock, as told to this press, speaks of Sallieu Turay’s alleged hijacking of an international book projects from the Sierra Leone Library Board; a development that was initiated by Sierra Leonean students in Ghana.
It has reached desks of this press that Sallieu has been receiving containers of books from an organization abroad (name withheld), stored the same at warehouses in Kissy and later sold secretly to people.
A reliable source has explained how Sallieu had set up a board for his organization, but did not include reputable civil society organizations such as Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), Sierra Leone Teachers Union (SLTU) etc.
That NGO donating books to Sallieu’s organization, considered necessary, an association that is completely apolitical; one that is represented by civil society groups.
Sallieu, we are told, never contacted SLAJ, SLTU etc, to enable them nominate persons representing their interest in the board, instead he is said to have appointed close friends of his.
Sources say a journalist was privately consulted and was made board member by Sallieu.
Conflict of interest: while he (Sallieu Turay) continues to operate a private NGO, he is also holding office as Deputy Chief Librarian at the Sierra Leone Library Board.
Information reaching this press explains how the disappearance of 46,650 books in three containers was the makeup of Sallieu and others unknown.
Misappropriation, in the laws of Sierra Leone, is a criminal offence.
To public’s opinion, it is requested that the Anti Corruption intervene and cause extensive findings on the disappearance of books meant for school going children.
