Child Rescue Mission campaigns on Sierra Leone environment

Child Rescue Mission Sierra Leone (CRM-SL) a community based organization operating in the Eastern Region of Sierra Leone last Saturday the 2nd of October, 2010 concluded a one day sensitization campaign on the theme “Addressing the Unfriendly Environmental Measures” within Communities in post war Sierra Leone and the control of Waste Management in rural areas in Sierra Leone. Funded by Disney Friends for Change a Youth Service Programme in the United States of America. The programme started with a procession from the Community Court Barry through Guinea /Liberia road and the central business place of Koindu Town, Konio Section, Kissy Teng Chiefdom, Kailahun District, Eastern region of Sierra Leone.

Welcoming us, the Regent Chief Mr. Jusu of Koindu Town, Konio Section, Kissy Teng Chiefdom, Kailahun District admonished us all to put dirt aside, as it is a health hazard. He also stressed on the need for the community to enforce its bye-laws on sanitation and advised all to stop forthwith on throwing dirt all over the town.

The Project co-ordinator, Mr. Sahr Yillia firstly thanked all stakeholders present for their kind and hospitable working relationship and urged them all to put hands on deck for the development of the chiefdom. He also informed the gathering about the essence of the programme, which he stated, is on proper management of waste in the chiefdom. Adding that as an indigene of this community, its development is his priority and is at the heart of his desire. He continued by thanking once again the community stakeholders and finally registered his profound apology for the delay and postponement of the programme due to unforeseeable circumstances.

Chief Foyoh Section Chief for Tolli section in his contribution appreciated and lauded the effort of the organization and encouraged all to support it ssuccess. Wilson Foyio on behalf of Fallay Thomas from Bandila Konio section also thanked the organisers for thinking about them and welcomed the initiative greatly.

The indefatigable and hard working Councillor Madam Fanta Alpha also lauded the programme and encouraged everyone of the community to compliment the effort of the organization to continue cleaning the community on every Saturday. She also emphasized the need for a stronger coordinating committee and the sustainability of the programme.

Adding his voice, the Community Health Officer, Mr. Suliaman Kanneh also thanked the imitative of the organisers and for their kind consideration of their chiefdom. He admonished all and sundry about the hazard of lack of proper sanitation, stating that it is better to prevent the disease than curing it at the end. He also informed the gathering that lack of proper sanitation will cause malaria and malaria kills more quickly than HIV/AIDS. He also advises the community Health Committee to step up and compliment the effort of the organisers and that it is the responsibility of everybody including the young people. He concluded by urging the youths chairman to facilitate the implementation and monitoring of the waste management programme in Koindu.

The Youth chairman, on his part and on behalf of the entire chiefdom also thanked the organisers and urged us all to start the work now.

The Commanding Officer, Captain Jones in his contribution whilst formally launching the campaign in Koindu Town, Konio Section, Kissy Teng Chiefdom, Kailahun District, firstly thanked the organisers and encouraged the youths to compliment the effort and also admonished them to take up responsibility for the development of the chiefdom. He advised them to be focused on development and deceit from political misguided activities, but put their concerted effort for the development of the chiefdom. Formally launching the programme, the Commanding Officer, Captain Jones on behalf of the Regent Chief, Section Chiefs, Councillor and young people of Koindu town urged all to take up the responsibility of cleaning our environment at all times.

The programme ended with community stakeholders and youth doing cleaning demonstration in the business areas.
