‘36 months of SLPP opposition’
What a bizarre headline. “36 months of SLPP opposition” by one David Worry writing in the APC Torchlight newspaper of Tuesday September 29. Believe me he should live up to his name by worrying whether his people have delivered on their promises over the last thirty six months. Like many of his colleagues who rush to print to bring themselves into the limelight Mr. Why Worry, oops! I mean Mr. David Worry does not appear to have any clue about the duties and responsibilities of a democratic opposition. They also indulge in the indefensible defense of Christiana Thorpe whom we continue to describe as a Fraudster of the highest degree. Perhaps David nor-worry should educate himself with the piece that I wrote about his heroine Christiana Thorpe on December 3, 2007 under the heading, “Madam, you have lost all credibility.” He could do so by courtesy of the Awareness Times newspaper of Tuesday December 3 which has by an interesting coincidence reproduced that article in its Tuesday September 29 edition. As an opposition ours is neither to praise the government nor to bury its shortcomings. Rather it is to hang them from a hilltop so that all would see it from afar. Can he recount a single occasion when the APC in opposition congratulated the erstwhile SLPP government for any successes? Does he recall whether any opposition APC Member of Parliament raised their voice when Philip Neville dropped his damaging but completely untrue bombshell in 2007 about the Libyan rice? Which of them said, ”that cannot be correct because we discussed the distribution fully in Parliament and that is why it was equitable?” why did Pa Don’t worry not scream at his party members when they walked out of Parliament over issues on which they felt strongly?.
We have kept this government on their toes by a robust and very intelligent posture in Parliament that could only be compared to the effectiveness of the then opposition members of Parliament led by Maada Salia Jusu-Sheriff before the introduction of the one party constitution in 1978. There were television and radio discussions on various radio stations to mark the 36 months of APC in office. While the opposition SLPP was much focused, there were also a number of well informed persons who while acknowledging some APC successes they were at the same time aware of exaggerated claims and shortcomings in many areas. As usual APC propagandists lumped them all under one banner as enemies of the APC and of progress.
As far as I can recollect there has been no instance where we have criticized without substituting alternatives. As for failure to acknowledge that the APC has striven hard to involve all in the development of the country, I will ask Pa David worry whether it is wrong to refer to the repeated brutal attacks on our premises and on our persons from the minute Christiana Thorpe announced her botched up figures on September 17, 2007. Some of the attacks were carried out by people who were very close to the President’s security outfit including the most notorious of them. What did the APC do about any of them other than try to extend them to bye-election areas? Should we not be highly commended for winning TWO Parliamentary bye-elections in our areas of influence under an APC regime, especially as the intolerance of that party deserves no credit for them, but to the tenacity of our members?
Several of our critics describe our party as disorganized and not capable of having a flag bearer to date. I thought we should be applauded for painfully going through a democratic process of electing a leader. What the likes of David Worry, One drop and Sheik Sesey should be doing as democrats is to exhort their leadership to leave it to the citizens to make a free choice to join them on their record. But the habit of targeting SLPP and PMDC members with bribery thuggery and coercion is reprehensible to say the least. Otherwise do yourself a favour pa don’t worry and stay quiet.
