Schools of Sinkunia – Building Educational Opportunities in Sierra Leone

Our family recently returned from a privately-financed trip to Sierra Leone.  We went to renew our relationships with the people in Sinkunia and assess the progress on the project.  We have good news to share with you and some new pictures so you can see what we saw in Africa.

The construction of the new school is making great progress.  You can see how much has been completed since Sheiku sent us photos from Sinkunia in August.  The Paramount Chief, Alimamy Lahai V, has diligently supervised the building project for the past 18 months.  When completed, this will be the only Senior Secondary School in the far northern Yalunka chiefdoms in Sierra Leone.  This school will be the equivalent to our American high schools.

We attended a celebration in a nearby town where the Paramount Chief discussed the project with nearby community leaders.  The new school will be the closest high school within 25 miles for many of these students.

We met with the teachers in Sinkunia to listen to their stories and ask questions about how we could help.  One of the challenges discussed was how to attract well qualified and inspired teachers to this remote area in Sierra Leone.  We also talked about the benefits of the school lunch program and our current scholarship opportunities.

Over fifty students gathered to carry some of your contributions to the Chief’s house to be presented to the school’s headmaster.  We want to thank all the people that donated items for us to take to Africa.

Please continue to visit our website for the latest news.  We welcome your questions and suggestions.  We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your continued support and encourage-ment.  You could help defray postage charges if you would send me your email addresses.

Finally, this young Sinkunia girl says “Thank you” from all of us!

  • I was asked upon by the chiefdom authorities to come and take up work in the SSS school at Sinkunia during which I made my first visit to the paramount Chief. Though conditions seems to be hard working in a remote community, I consented going there to teach untill I see what the future holds for me in serving the children of Sinkunia. I was told to check your website which I have done. Note also that I am a Computer Engineer and a Biology Teacher. I shall be at Sinkunia next week
