Christiana Thorpe to address SLAJ Monthly Symposium

Freetown – In view of the crucial role the media is expected to play in the 2012 presidential, legislative and local council elections, SLAJ has invited the Chairman of the National Electoral Commission, Dr Christiana Thorpe to address the September edition of the SLAJ Monthly Symposium, which is organized in collaboration with the BBC World Service Trust. She will speak on NEC’s Strategic Plan for the 2012 – engaging the media.

The programme will take place at 1:00 PM on Tuesday 28th September 2010 at the Harry Yansanneh Memorial Hall, SLAJ Headquarters, 56 Campbell Street, Freetown. The association wishes to invite all journalists, civil society activists, political party representatives and members of the wider public to this important symposium hinging on a very crucial issue in our country’s democratic dispensation.

The session will be highly interactive to ensure a proper understanding of the electoral process for onward analysis and explanation by journalists for the public’s comprehension.

SLAJ is aware of the crucial nature of the 2012 elections and is therefore committed to ensuring that the processes are free, fair and transparent. This is why it intends to ensure that its members, the gatekeepers of news, are well grounded in the dictates of the NEC election Plan in order to better inform and educate the public.

Blame has been cast in the past on some sections of the media for allegedly inflaming situations during elections in this country. The association stands for free, fair and transparent elections. Journalists should therefore seize the advantage this opportunity presents by attending in full.

Meanwhile, SLAJ wishes to inform that given the importance of this particular topic in the democratic good governance of this country, the symposium will be replicated in the Provincial Headquarter Towns of Makeni, Kenema and Bo in October, with NEC Regional Commissioners in these regions serving as Key Speakers.

Journalists, interested organizations/institutions or other members of the wider public are therefore urged to contact the SLAJ National Publicity Secretary, Mr Sayoh Kamara on 076/077- 622 501, or Ex-Officio Executive Member, Mrs. Williette James on 076 725 753 for further information and reservation of seats.

Signed: Ismael Korma, Ag.National Secretary General, SLAJ
