Thonminiya calls for Government attention
The people of the Thorminaya section in the Magbema Chiefdom and part of Masungbala Chiefdom in the Kambia district have called on government to step in with immediate effect to settle the long standing dispute between them and the CSE SL (a construction company) as the said problem, according to them, has the potential to create unrest in the Kambia District if not treated with the seriousness it deserves.
Movement for the Welfare of the Deprived Community, a local civil society movement since 2009 which has been championing the degree of human right violations and injustices meted out on the citizenry of the community are now very wary of the fact that no one seems to be doing anything about the matter.
According to investigations conducted by this medium, some time in March and April 2009, the authorities of Magbema Chiefdom in the Kambia district whose names cannot be mentioned reached an agreement with the CSE road construction company for the location of a quarry at Matham Kabaya and its environs but this press has been reliably informed that the said agreement was not communicated to the community people by the authorities concerned.
As a result of the continuous blasting by the company at the quarry mines, many mud houses in the village have either cracked or broken down, leaving many community people homeless.
After several attempts by the MFWDC to meet the authorities for explanation on the terms and conditions of the agreement proved futile, a seven man delegation from MFWDC was dispatched to see the Minister of Works, Alimamy P. Koroma on the issue sometimes last year but Sierra Express has learnt that nothing concrete came out of the meeting.
On the 25th August 2009, a letter was written to the General Manager CSE Kambia inviting him to a meeting called up by the Movement for the Welfare of the Deprived Community to set matters straight, the GM deliberately or otherwise refused to attend the meeting, sources told Sierra Express.
