Western Area Farmers benefit from High Breed supply
Farmers in the West of the country yesterday benefited from the supply of high breed cockerels in Freetown provided by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, an endeavour that is geared at cross-breeding the improved variety with local breeds so that better chickens can emerge to boost the food security situation in the country.Â
The ceremony which took place yesterday at the Lumley Agricultural Unit in the West of the city saw various farmer groups benefiting from the government input; which according to their various reactions “was a show of commitment and determination by the government to ensure that the food security drive gains momentum and culminate into its overall success. They were especially enthralled about the fact that they would in three months time be various owners of exotic highbred chickens that would serve both as food supplements and at the same time serve economic purposes to augment the financial status of farmers involved in Urban and Peri-urban Agriculture. The project according to the Director was jointly undertaken by the Ministry and the Freetown Municipality Council as part of the devolved function of local central government according to the local Government Act of 2004.
In a similar development last week, Western Area Agricultural Organizations held Farmers Election where farmers’ executives were elected at Chiefdom level that in-turn will elect Executive at District level according to the Director Western Area. Below is the result of the just concluded elections. Â
