Fuel price increases to Le16,500
It was very shocking yesterday afternoon when news went round that there had been an increase in the price of fuel from Le15,000 to Le16,500 per gallon. Consequently, transport fares for commercial vehicles immediately shot up to Le1,000.
Yesterday’s increase in the price of fuel created some confusion among commercial drivers and passengers.
According to some passengers interviewed by this reporter, they said they had not heard about the increase in fuel price either through the radio or the newspapers. Therefore some of the passengers refused to pay the self imposed of Le1,000 until it was announced by the government.
Speaking to Mohamed Kamara, a taxi driver, he stated that government should have announced the increase in fuel price earlier so that many people will understand that price of fuel has gone up with the subsequent increase in transport fares.
However, even though the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has announced that transport fares remain the same, Poda Poda and taxi drivers have been charging passengers one thousand Leones per person.
