Reckless attempt on President’s life and Ban Ki-Moon’s!
Was it a reckless threat on the President’s life and that of the Mr. Ban Ki-Moon?
This was comment made by on-lookers that were present at the scene when the attempted accident on the president’s life occurred during his state ride with the visiting UN Secretary General, Mr. Ban Ki-Moon in the same vehicle after the formal commissioning of the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC).
As reckless riding has become part of bike riders (Okada-Riders) in Freetown, it shocked many bystanders who witnessed the unfortunate incident yesterday 15th June 2010 along Pademba Road when at about 1:25 pm, the young Okada rider swiftly rode through and crossed the path of the convoy of vehicles carrying the President and the UN Chief to State House.
President Koroma and entourage were returning from New England Ville after commissioning the new SLBC. The Okada rider had to be chased by security personnel and was later intercepted at the junction of Liverpool Street.
Reports say he was severely beaten before he was whisked to the police station where he is helping police in their investigation.
Eye-witnesses at the scene intimated to Sierra Express Media that the President and his entourage were returning to State House when two reckless motor bike riders recklessly broke into the convoy, right in front of the President’s car. It is not yet clear whether it was a case of an attempt on the life of the President or a mere accident.
Many other concerned Sierra Leoneans have told SEM that this is not the first incident Okada riders have made attempts on the lives of people on the streets of Freetown. There are reports that most of the victims in road accidents are from Okada riders, and that even though the police try their best to remove them from the main commercial centres, they have always defied the police.
