Ghana strike late to beat Latvia

Ghana won their final World Cup warm-up match 1-0 against Latvia, thanks to an 89th-minute strike from Quincy Owusu Abeyie. (Photo: Quincy Owusu Abeyie struck late on to give Ghana victory over the Latvians)

The second-half substitute struck a long range shot that beat Latvia’s replacement goalkeeper Aleksandrs Kolinko, who should have dealt with it.

Ghana created the better openings in the first half when Asamoah Gyan’s neat take and volley struck the bar.

The ball appeared to cross the line on the reply evidence but was not awarded.

Kwadwo Asamoah also blasted over after he had been nicely set up by Gyan, while Gyan himself curled a shot wide after some brilliant work through the middle.

Ghana are now due to arrive in South Africa early on Monday where they will play Serbia, Australia and Germany in the group stages of the 2010 World Cup.
