Regional Cleansing at Stats-Sierra Leone as SLPP Sacks Top Guns From The North
As the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) led government of President Julius Maada Bio, continues its divide and rule politics in the country with the daily massive sackings of thousands of Sierra Leoneans particularly from the north-west regions of the country, another set of Sierra Leoneans have become the latest victims.
On Friday, 17th May, 2019, four top guns at Stats-SL including Peter Bangura, Director of Demography and Social Statistics, Abubakarr Turay, Director of Economics Statistics, Ibrahim G Kargbo, director of Data and Samuel Turay, Principal Statistician all from the northern region, were shown the exit door by the Statistics Council headed by Moses Williams.
No convincing reason was given for such an inhuman action but sources say, they are being accused of providing census and inflation figures that does not favour the current administration.
The decision to sack only the directors from the north while leaving the other directors from the south-east, according to sources within the Council, was taken on Tuesday, 14th May, 2019 during the meeting of the Stats SL Council where the chairman, Moses Williams, clearly told council members that he had instructions from State House to terminate the services of said directors and over 100 others who had served the institution and the country over the past decade or so diligently. Even though other members of the Council kicked against such wicked decision, the wishes of State House ended up superseding that of the national wish.
It could be noted that Stats SL comprises five (5) directors including Andrew Johhny, Director of Geographic Information Systems, Peter Bangura, Director of Demographic and Social Statistics, Abubakarr Turay, Director of Economics Statistics, Lansana Kpwello Kanneh, Director of Finance, Administration and Human Resources and Ibrahim Gibrill Kargbo, Director of Data who is currently very sick.
These directors have being in the institution for the last ten years of the All People Congress administration without sacking any of them only for the SLPP to come and sack those from the north. If this is not regional cleansing, what is?, a concerned employee stated on condition of anonymity.
Though efforts to reach the chairman of the Statistics Council proved futile, but the Statistician General, Professor Osman Sankoh, denied that those sacked were not directors from the north. He further that Council will make a statement on the issue and also promised to find out.
