SLFA traffics drugs says Sierra Leone Sports Minister

The House of Parliament yesterday summoned the Minister of Sports, Hon. Paul Kamara and the President of the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA), Isha Johansen (in photo) to settle the long standing dispute between the minister and the SLFA.

The SLFA has been complaining that the Sports Minister has been unduly interfering into the day to day administration of administration of the association.

In a correspondence dated 2nd June, 2014, SLFA officially complained the minister to the parliamentary sports committee and other stakeholders accusing him of undue interference into the day to day running of the association, thereby interrupting the smooth operations of SLFA.  SLFA also accused the minister of using the press to put the association into a bad light and, by so doing, creating unwarranted embarrassment for both the SLFA and the Sports Ministry.

Speaking in parliament,  SLFA President, Isha Johansen, accused the minister of embezzling $900 which she entrusted to him to travel to Switzerland on an important sporting activity. This, she went on, caused her to spend an extra $600 on the Deputy Sports Minister, Al-Sankoh Conteh, for him to make the trip to Switzerland.  SLFA president lamented that all efforts to draw a line between the functions of the Sports Minister and those of the SLFA president have proven futile.

According to  SLFA President,  Sports Minister, Paul Kamara, has hijacked almost all her functions. The minister, she explained, determines who should travel for international matches.

Responding to the SLFA allegations, the Sports Minister told parliament that the SLFA is highly involved in drugs trafficking and match fixing but when parliament asked him to provide evidence for his claims, he could not.   The minister insisted that he has every right to meddle into the activities of the association.

The Chairman of the Sports Committee, Hon. Ibrahim Martin Bangura of constituency 31 in Bombali District, seeing that tension was mounting, advised that the matter be adjourned to Tuesday, July 1st when there will be a closed door meeting to resolve the matter.
