Tourism creates jobs and contributes to sustainable development
The Minster of Tourism and Culture, Dr. Bayoku Conteh, has told newsmen that his Ministry does not only create jobs but it contributes greatly to sustainable development growth of the country which he described as everybody’s business.
‘’I spend time to promote tourism and culture in Sierra Leone because it is my responsibility,’’ the Minister stated, and continued that the country is now stable, safe and can serve a lot of investment opportunities that investors must take advantage of.
Dr. Bayoku Conteh explained that he has had the opportunity to meet with fifty nine Sierra Leoneans in Italy calling themselves the Friends of Koinadugu who, said they are philanthropists because they have offered a lot of help to their district including the construction of a health centre, provisions of a generator, medicines and other medical equipment.
He explained that all operational issues of the Ministry are under the purview of the Tourism Board Control and that the cleaning of Freetown including the beaches is the responsibility of the Freetown City Council while the management of land including beaches is done by the National Tourist Board and not by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture.
He explained that there is a plan to review the Tourism Development Act and come up with a National Tourism Policy. He reechoed that they are also looking out for funding to develop the Lumley Beach and other recreational facilities if donor partners provide them with funds.
‘’We have big dreams and we are determined to succeed with the full cooperation of the public especially media practitioners in disseminating vital information on tourism and culture in the country,” he concluded.
