Milla Group Concludes Public Disclosure on ESHIA

Giving an overview of the public disclosure as mandated by Law a Representative of the Environmental Protection Agency Bintu Kelfala properly explained about the significance of the Environmental Social Health Impact Assessment (ESHIA) survey for the purpose of meeting accepted environmental standards.
She said EPA is working towards sustainable environmental management in the country by enforcing the rules and regulations governing activities carried out on the environment for mitigation measures.
Bintu Kelfala stated that during the production of plastic materials it is possible that the environment will be polluted but with the ESHIA recommendations mitigation measures will be undertaken by the company for the goo health of the workers, communities and the environment.
Osman Kamara the Business and Agro –Development Consultant from the Sustainable Livelihood Consultancy highlighted the various steps they took in the conduct of the Environmental Social Health Impact Assessment (ESHIA) survey scoping within the Fisher Lane community where the company operates.
He said scientifically plastic wastes are destructive to the environment but stated that the habit of the ordinary Sierra Leonean in waste disposal causes severe environmental hazards in society and called for a responsible approach towards use and misuse of plastic materials in communities.
He said Milla Group has brought a lot of benefits to the community they operate by creating jobs for many youths and for also contributing to socio- economic development of the country. The consultant also stated that Milla Group is locally manufacturing cheaper alternative plastic household utensils for an affordable prize through the use of state of the art technologies.
He assured that “Milla Group activities do not cause any major environmental problems that can cause severe harm to the community they operate and the environment.”
He said the report also recommends that proper mitigation measures to be taken to reduce plastic waste on the environment by setting up a recycling plant within communities and to also sprinkle water on the dusty Fisher Lane road leading to the factory.
Osman Kamara the Business and Agro –Development Consultant from the Sustainable Livelihood Consultancy also explained that during the scoping survey many requests were made by respondents in the areas of the provision of Scholarships for under privileged children, fisher lane road maintainace additional tap water, youth employment and protective gadgets for factory workers.
Participants of the public disclosure on the Milla Group Environmental Social Health Impact Assessment (ESHIA) survey appealed to the General Manager of the Company Mr. Soni Ramkrishnan to protect the environment with continued support towards the development of the Fisher Lane Community.
Ishmael Kamara a community stakeholder who chaired the public disclosure implored the fisher lane community to embrace Milla Group for the protection of their environment and the development of the country an interactive question and answer session and validation of the Environmental Social Health Impact Assessment (ESHIA) survey formed a high point of the public disclosure.
