Ivor Leigh Targets Quality Education

Renowned community philanthropist cum politician, Ivor Leigh (in photo) has doled out yet another set of scholarships to deserving pupils of various Junior Secondary Schools in his locality.

In an exclusive interview with this press, Leigh pointed out that he is offering a total of 30 scholarships but will award the first set of 20 and will later issue the remaining 10 to pupils awaiting the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results.

“I did the same gesture in 2010 and in 2011 and I promised to replicate it on a yearly basis”, he revealed, and further disclosed that the scholarship package comprised of a year’s tuition fees, all the prescribed text books, exercise books, and Le100,000 cash. Ivor revealed that funds for the award of these scholarships were obtained from partners and friends and from his personal purse. He lauded the NGO Grace Sierra Leone for their relentless support to his initiative.

Leigh maintained that his target on education of children in his community was born out of his passion for deprived school going children in Kaningo, Lunley much as their parents are mostly illiterates and do not know the value of education.

“I want this gesture to serve as an impetus that will give them the urge to gain quality education that would subsequently benefit the nation”.

The young and enterprising Ivor Leigh craved for more funds so that he can extend his generosity to other children across the country.

Leigh vied for the position of a councilor for the November 2012 Multi-tier elections in Ward 394, Constituency 112 but his hope was dashed as he was denied his APC party symbol in the primaries. He says that he is not despair as he knows that ‘God’s time is the best’.
