ACC partners with SL Library Board Bo, in the fight against corruption

As a result of the determination to enhance increased participation of government institutions in the fight against corruption in Sierra Leone, the Southern regional office of the Anti-Corruption Commission has on Wednesday, 25th July 2012 met with a cross section of staff of the Library Board in Bo to update them about the work and specific mandate of the ACC.

Welcoming the Anti Corruption Commission team, the Regional Librarian Mr. Musa- Bala Mansaray reiterated the marriage that had earlier existed between the ACC and his office. He said the library was meant to be a significant institution for information sharing and implored the ACC to make use of that medium. Mr. Mansaray maintained that meeting with the ACC was a significant step as it will enhance cooperation and collaboration between the two institutions in the area of capacity building and information sharing. He admonished colleagues to take their jobs seriously and shy away from corruption.

Speaking on the purpose of the meeting, the Public Education Officer South, Mr. Wilfred Bangura maintained that, his department was poised to get more people in the fight against corruption. He said their presence in the library was to strengthen the ties that had existed between them and the ACC and assured that the Southern regional office of the commission would revitalize that relationship in the interest of the public. Mr. Bangura opined that fighting corruption should not be left in the hands of the ACC alone but should include other institutions in both public and private sectors. He encouraged all present to resist, report and confront corruption at all times.

Making his statement on the need for collaboration and cooperation, the Bo District Coordinator Mr. Tony Samu said the relationship between the ACC and the Sierra Leone Library Board should be strengthened in the area of information sharing and promoting mutual interests for the betterment of the country. Mr. Samu stressed that the two institutions should work together and should update same in the area of fighting graft. He encouraged all to take corruption seriously as it has the tendency to undermine development and promote poverty in the society.

The Regional Manager South, Mr. Mohamed Dumbuya in his address maintained that the library should be a vehicle to enhance information dissemination and also a theatre of knowledge. He said since the year 2000 when the commission was established a number of high profile public officials have been prosecuted which should serve as a lesson to all and sundry.  Mr. Dumbuya said Sierra Leone had persistently come last in the Human Development Index in the recent past, partly due to the endemic corruption that was prevalent in the country. He said the trend has now changed as we have scored significant gains in fighting corruption over the years. He also noted that the TRC report made reference to the effect of corruption and warned participants to stay away from this dangerous menace.

Questions and answers and a vote of thanks by Miss Brewah climaxed the occasion.
