SL Labour Congress ends workshop

The Sierra Leone Labour Congress in partnership with National Social Security National Trust (NASSIT) yesterday ended a one day workshop at the National Stadium Hostel at Brookfields Freetown.

The workshop was for media training on Social Security coverage, geared toward raising awareness from among media practitioners about the importance of NASSIT.

Giving an overview, Mr. Max Conteh, representative of Labour Congress stated clearly that the Sierra Leone Reporters Union should endeavour to identify the role of the media in the promotion of Social Security in Sierra Leone.

He said that as a congress they have advocacy programmes on Social Security schemes which have achieved a lot.

The Director of Operations NASSIT, Mohamed Gondo said that Social Security provides protection for its members through a series of public measures on the economic and social distress that are otherwise caused by the stoppage or substantial reduction of earnings resulting from sickness, maternity, employment injury, in validity, unemployment old-age and death.

He further said that NASSIT caters for the provision subsidies for families with children.

He said NASSIT was established by an Act of Parliament and it provides retirement and other benefits to meet the contingency needs of workers and their dependants.

“The scheme of NASSIT and Insurance Trust is a statutory public trust established by parliament Act 5 of 2001. It is charged with the responsibility to administering Sierra Leone National Pension Scheme.”

The NASSIT scheme was outlined to all.

It is told that it covers three fundamental contingencies, old age, Invalidity and death.
