SLPP talks about youth unemployment

The Chairman of the main opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party says his party considers youth unemployment in Sierra Leone as not only a human development issue, but also a matter with some security implications.

John Oponjo Benjamin (in photo) made the statement during his party’s monthly press briefing in Freetown.

He said after the decade long civil war in the country, the then SLPP government set up a youth ministry, developed a youth policy and established youth councils in all the chiefdom headquarter towns to build the capacity of young people.

He claimed that less than one year after the initiation of the Youth Employment Scheme (YES), over 20,000 youths were employed across the country.

The SLPP Chairman said the SLPP was dismayed at the abandonment of such policies by the APC administration, which, according to him, had resulted to about 6% youth unemployment in the country. He called on the government to set up the youth commission to help address the plight of the youth.
