EU provides 23.5 million Euros for road project

Freetown, 09 June (SLENA): Finance and Economic Development Minister, Dr. Samura Kamara and the Head of the European Union Delegate, Jean-Pierre Reymendet-Comney, have signed a 23.5 million Euros road project which is funded by the European Union for the rehabilitation of the Makeni-Kabala Highway and for the expansion of seven bridges along the Masiaka Highway, and the reconstruction of Rue de-la-Paix (Peace Road) from Leicester Peak connecting IMATT and Berry Street and Beach Road from Lumley to Aberdeen.

Signing the agreement on behalf of the Sierra Leone Government, the Minister, Dr. Samura Kamara said that the protective infrastructural work is the kind of development every meaningful Sierra Leonean should look forward to. He observed that Government infrastructural programmes cover, among others, roads and energy, hence government is sourcing funding from all over the world to achieve its goals.

He described the European Union as a dependable partner and called on the contractors to commence work immediately since the roads work would enhance regional integration and stressed that the work should be completed by 2014.

Head of Delegation for the European Union, Jean-Pierre Reymondet-Commoy, expressed appreciation for the Rogbere Conakry highway construction and that the fund is part of the EU infrastructural programs.

In his remarks, Director of the National Authorizing Office, Ibrahim Sorieba Kanu, said the project work includes reconstruction or rehabilitation of localized failed sections with double bituminous surface treatment totaling 100km, improving existing drains and the construction of new ones as well as maintenance.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by the two deputy ministers of Finance, the Director General and Board Chairman of the Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA).
