ABC evokes new ideology in Makeni

Emphasizing this point the Paramount Chief of Binkolo, Alimamy Dura III mentioned that it is obligatory on Sierra Leoneans to map out a consistent national ideology that abhors negative attitudes and behaviours outright. According to him the previous absence of an institution charged with the responsibility to monitor and address the impacts of people’s odd attitudes and behaviours on national development had been a serious abnormality. He therefore termed President Koroma’s establishment of the ABC Secretariat as novel and a move in the right direction. P.C. Alimamy Dura III called on the audience and Sierra Leoneans in general to transform from behaving negatively to positively.
In his keynote address the Regional Human Rights Officer – North, Mr. Yallah Bangura called the ABC Secretariat’s dialogue with the people of Makeni as a big opportunity that is supposed to be exploited. Bad attitudes and behaviors he claimed are responsible for the unsuccessfulness of former leaders. “It is not surprising therefore on the assumption of office, His Excellency President Ernest Bai Koroma had the vision of transformation and called for Attitudinal and Behavioural Change so that their impediment to socio-economic and political development could be identified and completely changed for a peaceful , progressive and united country”, he said. This sincere call of President Koroma, the Human Rights officer pleaded, must be accepted by all. The campaign for the Agenda for Change Yallah Bangura admonished is supposed to be considered as a national course which should not be stifled by partisan, tribal, or regional affiliations.

Welcoming participants, the Mayor of Makeni City Council, Moses Sesay revealed that negative behaviors like corruption, unpatriotic tendencies, disregard for rules and regulations, pulling him or her down syndromes, and the culture of silence among others have caused Sierra Leoneans to think individualistically rather than nationally. He informed the ABC Secretariat that though their task is an appropriate means to rebrand Sierra Leone, it is daunting, and he called on the Government, citizens and development partners to provide the secretariat with its required resources.

Introducing the ABC concept, the Executive Director of the ABC Secretariat Dr. Ivan Agibola Thomas, heaped praises on the people of Makeni for highlighting the absence of a comprehensive national ideology. Dr Thomas opined that although Sierra Leone operates on democratic and free market principles the lack of a common nationalistic ideology has resulted in a series of problems. He called for the formation of a user friendly ideology that will enhance speedy national development. He stated that his institution values the strength of partnership with all stakeholders in order to ensure that bad attitudes and behaviours which have been infesting national development could be expunged from societies. Dr. Thomas promised those present that with their unfettered cooperation and commitment Sierra Leone will soon become a progressive, stable and focused country.
The National Coordinator and Second-in-Command of ABC Secretariat Mrs Nanette Thomas dilated on the consequences of uncalled attitudes and behaviors. “Positive attitude and behaviour are everything to individual and national prosperity,” Madam Thomas stressed.
She attributed national decadence to ubiquitous menance of bad behaviours in every sector of governance. The National Coordinator revealed her organization’s determination in halting prevalence of bad attitudes and behaviours. According to her the ABC secretariat hopes to do this through participatory dialogue, partnership and the formation of ABC clubs. She encouraged every Sierra Leonean to dream big and think big.
Mr Eric Dura Sesay who chaired the sensitization programme remarked that with positive attitudes and behaviours he is confident that the economic and political development in Sierra Leone will improve within a matter of time. He therefore enticed Sierra Leoneans to join the bandwagon of the “Agenda for Change”.
In her observation Madam Bomposseh N’Silk II called on the younger generation to phantom role models. In her view espousing good virtues and morals are solutions to Sierra Leones problem. She encouraged the ABC Secretariat to be tactful, resilient and focused.
