Scam…Mayor’s land thievery exposed

The Mayor of Freetown, Herbert George Williams, is said to have grabbed a piece of land situated at Fergusson Street, owned and belonged to one Haja Sia Alie.

Reports are that the Ministry of Lands and Country Planning have proved that the land in question is the rightful property of Haja Sia Alie.

That the Ministry of Lands, on 14th July 2011, asked the police to give a helping hand to Haja Sia Alie and remove squatters occupying her land at Fergusson Street.

Barely weeks after police’s removal and destruction of make-shift structures erected by unknown squatters, the Mayor of Freetown, Herbert George Williams, unceremoniously stuck up a signboard indicating that the property is owned by the Freetown City Council.

He later ordered the squatters to re-take possession of the land; not as unlawful residents, but as tenants of the Freetown City Council.

It is a fact that the land in question was bought by Haja Sia Allie in May of 2001, and was always under her control, supervision and ownership.

Until 2005-2006 when squatters unlawfully took possession of the land, the land was completely fenced and never had any encroachment of City Council’s grabbing/squatting syndromes at all.

Findings have it that Mayor Williams has a land flanking the land of Haja Sia Alie’s and has built a church there.

It could be recalled that the Director of Country Planning, A.R Kai Banya, once wrote to the Minister of Lands and the police, requesting them cause the removal of make-shift structures and squatters from a private land belonging to one Haja Sia Alie.

According to letter written the Minister of Lands by the Director of Country Planning, it is stated that the site is located at Fergusson Street by SM Broderick, that the squatters have claimed to have been given the land by Mayor Williams, that the illegal occupants used the land for illicit business purposes such as the selling of dangerous drugs ‘diamba’ and alcohol.

That soon after the removal of squatters from the land, Mayor Williams was observed holding meetings with youths (practically sellers of dangerous drugs), which consequently lead to the fixing of a signboard with an inscription that the land is property of City Council.

It has been told that Mayor Williams has had easy time using his institution ‘the Freetown City Council’ as a safeguard as he makes frantic move to appropriate/grab the property of Haja Sia Alie.

Haja Sia Alie has told this press that she intends fight back; using all the necessary and accessible means to tell the world that the Freetown Mayor, whose contractual obligation surrounds protecting all under him, and not appropriate private property of vulnerable people, has practically become a land grabber.

“I intend seeing the President first, if it fails, I shall have no option but engage the media,” Haja Sia Alie said.

“But if all of these fail, then I shall have no choice but tell Mayor Williams that I came from the up country.”

Officials of the Ministry of Lands have told this press that the land at Fergusson Street is the property of Haja Sia Alie and not Mayor Williams or Freetown City Council at all.

Investigation has shown that there is no record at the Ministry of Lands certifying that the land at Fergusson Street is property of the Freetown City Council as purported by Mayor Williams.

Limitless efforts made to get comment from Mayor Williams proved futile.
