Sierra Leone Embassy in Moscow attends roundtable business forum

Officials from the Embassy of the Republic of Sierra Leone in Moscow have attended a one day roundtable business forum dealing with bilateral economic and cultural cooperation with countries in the Sub-Saharan Africa in Vienna, Geneva. It was organized by the Mixed Chamber of Commerce-Czech Republic-Sub-Saharan Africa which, since establishment in January 2007, has won recognition with Czech and African partners from private as well as government sectors.

The discussion round table brought together representatives of diplomatic offices of 11 countries of the Sub-Saharan Africa. The African participants have highly appreciated the unreserved discussions as well as the fact that such an event had been organized.

The Head of Chancery and Cousellor, Mr Ibrahim V. Kondoh, who represented Sierra Leone said the forum provided an opportunity for direct interaction as an effective way to strengthen economic cooperation with business executive directors and potential investors. The forum participants discussed extensively on strategic measures to be adopted in order to explore the enormous emerging business potentials and economic opportunities that they consider useful for the economy of the Sub-Saharan countries.

An official report said that the Embassy of the Republic of Sierra Leone in Moscow striving to strengthen bilateral relations based economic and cultural cooperation between Sierra Leone and the Czech Republic desires to develop such relations in the field of education and science by recommending and for subsequent implementation of the following: to establish and develop direct cooperation between higher educational institutions, to carry out joint research programmes in the sphere of cultural, humanitarian, technical publications of mutual interest in both countries.

The report further recommended distribution of scientific and technical publications of mutual interests, broadening participation in scientific seminars and conferences in both countries, and humbly requested the Czech authorities to provide additional scholarships ranging from undergraduate to postgraduate studies thereby serving as a vehicle through which various cultures and languages of both countries can be exchanged and promoted.

In the field of trade and economic cooperation, the Embassy requested for the creation of customs union or a free-trade area between the two countries. Both countries should encourage the opening of branch officials of foreign trade organizations, companies, firms, banks and other commercial institutions in each other’s territory in accordance with their national laws and regulations.

Mr. Kondoh informed that Sierra Leone offers many investment opportunities to countries that are interested in transacting business and investing in the economy and added “at the moment, we have four main sectors (agriculture, fisheries, mining and tourism) for development and economic growth that provide attractive opportunities for direct investment.”
