In Sierra Leone Unlawful Arrests & Detentions – Hon. Mohamed Bangura Blasts

One of the main opposition All Peoples Congress (APC) Members of Parliament, Mohamed Bangura has spoken out frankly that the detention of the two opposition heavyweights at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for over 7 consecutive days without taking them to court for trial is injustice and totally unfair to them as a party and nation as a whole.

Mr. Bangura was responding to media interviews in front of the CID Building on Siaka Stevens Street in Freetown on Monday, 21st October, 2019.

According to the law maker, the Sierra Leone Police said, the two people including former Mayor of the Freetown City Council (FCC), Herbert George Williams and one of the APC’s mouthpiece, Mohamed Daramy were arrested in connection with the bye election riot at Constituency 110 at Hamilton Village, Western Rural District.

The legislator described the continuous incarceration of the opposition members as against their human rights and he encouraged the Police to display justice by sending the two big men to court so that they can go through the due process rather than keeping them at CID.

It could be recalled that during the campaign activity for the bye election at Constituency 110, Karamoh Kabbah and others were arrested by the Police to Pa Demba Road before later charged to court for allegation of igniting violence.

It would surprise someone to understand that Herbert George Williams and Mohamed Daramy are currently imprisoned in connection with the same allegation.

Mohamed Bangura is therefore calling on the Police to observe and guarantees the human rights of the detainees for the fact that he said, it is unconstitutional to hold somebody in custody without charging him or her to court for over 72 hours or three days without going to court.
