Health Ministry Reviews Draft Plan for Post Ebola Activities

Addressing the high level technical meeting at the Sierra Light House Hotel in Aberdeen, Freetown, the Minister of Health and Sanitation, Dr. Abu Bakarr Fofanah in his opening speech, re-affirmed government’s commitment and support in ensuring that health professionals work in a conducive environment to deliver the necessary impact ahead of the post Ebola period.

Dr. Fofanah commended the Technical Team, and health development partners for the commitment demonstrated in the fight to building a resilient system for health in Sierra Leone, and encouraged the different technical groups to effectively participate in the Review process with a view to producing a resourceful product.

He expressed gratitude and appreciation to WHO for the central role played in the process including the World Bank, UNICEF, ADB, UNFPA WFP and other partners, both international and local NGOs for their continued support to the Ministry, the government and people of Sierra Leone.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health and Sanitation, Mr. David Wayland Sinford Banya underscored the importance of the Recovery Meeting ahead of the post Ebola era, noting that going back to the drawing board for the improvement of the country’s health system is imperative for all stakeholders.

He described the medical practitioners as front line workers in the fight against Ebola, as well as in building a resilient health system for the country.

Mr. Banya appreciates the collaboration seen, and reiterated his commitment and preparedness to work with his staff in Team Spirit.

The World Bank Senior Health Specialist, Shunsuke Mabuchi reiterated the World Bank and UNDP’s support to the process, stressing the need for continued effective collaboration in building a resilient health system for the country.

Other speakers and representatives from UNICEF and WHO, Deputy Director of Programme, Mr. Christian Salazar-Volkmann,  and the Policy, Practice and Evaluation, Emergency Risk Management and Humanitarian Response Specialist, Dr. Andre Griekspoor, in a similar vein, reiterated their support to the event, chaired by the newly appointed Director of Health Systems Planning, Policy and Information, Dr. Samuel A.S. Kargbo.
