SFC to be dragged to court for Le 66M

Latest reports reaching this press have indicated that one of Sierra Fishing Company (SFC) vessel’s named West Africa 7 and 8 damaged a shark net belonging to Pa Alhaji Kargbo in Tombo.

The incident happened on December 4th 2003 at about 3.30 am in the Banana Area when West Africa 7 and 8 ran into their nets but luckily for them they were able to chase and board the vessel but the captain of the vessel told them to report the matter to the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources.  Pa Alhaji Kargbo revealed that he lost 12 bundles of nets, 20 bundles of rope, and 2,500 cork and 1,500 lead.

He added that no action had been taken by Sierra Fishing Company for any amicable solution despite the Ministries effort to revolve a means of them earning their living.

It could be recalled that SFC due to violations in certain areas should not fish in Sierra Leone territorial waters.

They showed the damages being done to Artisanal fishing nets which cost millions of Leones.

Even they Ministry of Marine Resources and Fisheries could ascertain to the fact that SFC is notorious to destroying peoples nets.  They also catch where fishes are supposed to breed, which is a serious offence.
