British Council and Standard Chartered Bank launch English radio programmes

In its attempt at creating educational opportunities, the British Council with sponsorship from Standard Chartered Bank and in partnership with Plan Sierra Leone launch English by Radio programmes on May 31, 2011 at the British Council Auditorium

The British Council with sponsorship from Standard Chartered Bank in Sierra Leone and in partnership with Plan Sierra Leone is starting to support English teaching and learning in Sierra Leone, using the radio.  The launch of these new radio programs by the Chief Education Officer is on May 31, 2011 at 10:00 am in British Council auditorium in Freetown.

British Council is using radio because it can reach many more people this way, across the whole country. The radio programs contain two series:  Teaching English Radio for teachers and ‘Obla Air’, for young people.

Teaching English Radio is a series of radio programmes aimed at teachers with low level qualifications who lack confidence in their knowledge of English.  The programmes are designed to motivate teachers and encourage them to use more learner- centred practices so their classes are more effective. They give teachers practical guidance on how to teach big classes without any resources. In addition to the broadcasts, British Council and Plan Sierra Leone are utilising the programmes in teacher training in four districts.

‘Obla Air’ Learn English Radio is a series of radio programmes that provide general listening practice, basic English language skills and entertainment. The intended audience is young adults: students, job hunters and aspirants – but anyone may find the programmes appealing.

Albert Saltson, the Managing Director of Standard Chartered Bank Sierra Leone Limited stated that: “We are delighted to sponsor the learning and teaching English Language programmes in partnership with the British Council. This sponsorship is uniquely aimed at embedding the English Language in our school children, to foster academic excellence. Standard Chartered Bank’s established footprint in Sierra Leone, along with our long history of supporting the socio-economic development of the country, places us in a unique position to address pressing needs in our local community”.

The launch will be attended by educational organizations and institutions and radio stations, and statements will be made by Standard Chartered Bank, Ministry of Education, Sierra Leone Association of Teachers of English, Plan Sierra Leone, and Sierra Leone Teachers Union.  Samples of the programmes will be played to entice listeners and to encourage radio stations to broadcast the programmes.
