Parliament Approves CHOs Act
The Parliament of the Republic of Sierra Leone on Thursday, 11th May, 2017, enacted the long awaited Community Health Practitioners Act 2016, a private member Bill drafted by Honorable Mohamed L. Mansaray of constituency 047, Koinadugu district.
Honorable ML Mansaray said that the objective of the Bill is to establish the Community Health Practitioners Regulatory Board.
According to him, the Community Health Officers (CHOs) were recommended in 1983 during the regime of the former President Siaka Stevens, since then, he said, the CHOs have been going through challenges that necessitate their regulation.
Honorable ML Mansaray in an exclusive interview with this medium, said that he feels happiest and most fulfilled for being the third Member of the Sierra Leone Parliament, under the Government of His Excellency, Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, to bring a bill overwhelmingly supported by the nation and enacted by Parliament.
He also said that CHOs are in charge of almost all the Community Health Centers country wide and that they have been working under tight conditions even though they are on salary.
Hon. Mansaray pointed out that even though CHOs had no legal instruments, they were successfully performing surgical operations and other medical functions and well manning health centers.
Hon. Mansaray finally stated that though it is one of the responsibilities of the Ministry of Health and Sanitation to bring their regulatory board to parliament for approval, it also his responsibility as a Member of Parliament to make and amend laws.
