3 killed in Kabala riot in Sierra Leone
The youths of Koinadugu District in the Northern Region yesterday went on the rampage in Kabala when they learnt that the youth village project which the President proposed for the district has been relocated to either Masiaka in Port Loko District or Mile 91 in Tonkolili District.
According to authentic report, prior to the riot, the Kabala Youth Chairman, Mohamed J. Marrah, had met with the Bank Governor, Dr. Kalfala Marah, who also hails fr4om the district, to discuss their intentions.
The Bank Governor reportedly advised the Youth Chairman to desist from any action that would be counter-productive but he refused to adhere to the admonition.
Following the riot, eye-witness accounts say the police responded by firing teargas canisters and live bullets at the protesters thereby culminating in the killing of three persons while several others were injured.
The irate youths reportedly burnt down the All People’s Congress (APC) District Office as well as the houses of the Local Unit Commander (LUC) Superintendent Alimamy Bangura of Bulimia Road and the Prosecutor, Constable Osman Marrah of Pitaya.
The Resident Minister North, Mr. Alie Kamara, and the Deputy Minister of Political and Public Affairs, Mr. Ahkmed Femi Mansaray are currently in Kabala to restore sanity to the district headquarters.
Meanwhile, personnel of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) have been deployed in the township and its environs, while curfew has been declared until further notice.
