Explaining the essence of their tour to Ambassador Ibrahim Sorie during a courtesy call, Mr. Kuyateh stated that they are on a familiarization and sensitization drive in preparation for the possible launching of a NASSIT Diaspora participation Pension Scheme.
NASSIT’s Deputy DG disclosed further that the Diaspora Scheme that NASSIT is about to launch, probably in June this year, is principally to enable Sierra Leoneans living in the Diaspora to establish their pension schemes by voluntarily contributing to the Fund. This, he emphasized, will enable Sierra Leonean contributors living overseas to have access to NASSIT facilities like pension, health, housing etc, when they shall have decided to return home.
The pilot project, according to Kuyateh, will commence with Sierra Leoneans in the UK, USA, Belgium, The Netherland (Holland), Germany, The Gambia and Ghana.
He furthered that each of the Sierra Leonean missions in the countries mentioned above, will have a NASSIT Desk Officer who will be tasked to register members, compile biometric details and issue NASSIT ID cards.
“We want first to target countries with a strong concentration of Sierra Leoneans. NASSIT believes that Sierra Leoneans in the Diaspora should now move beyond remittances and concentrate on assured pension opportunities”, Kuyateh emphasized.
He intimated that the pilot project will eventually be extended to all Sierra Leone missions abroad after an initial testing period of six months to one year.
Ambassador Ibrahim Sorie thanked the NASSIT team for the visit and commended the institution for hatching ‘such a brilliant’ idea by targeting Sierra Leoneans living overseas. He expressed optimism that Sierra Leoneans will be ready to cooperate as NASSIT has become a household name in the country that has stood the test of time. He pledged his support and that of the Embassy staff to inform Sierra Leoneans in his countries of accreditation about the pending scheme. “
Many Sierra Leoneans have confidence in the operations of NASSIT, and I’m sure with the crop of the present management team, NASSIT will continue to grow and create the desired impact”, Ambassador Sorie reiterated.
