Islamic solutions to Ebola

1 –Prevention: Health is captured in Chapter 5 of the Holy Quran known as SURA MAIDAH (The Table spread).

The SURA promotes health and hospitalization, treatment and handling of patients. In general it explains the need for the society or communities to remain healthy.

2 -Touch/Body contact/Hand washing: To ensure spiritual and personal hygiene and environment/surroundings.

Quotation:

O you who believe when you prepare for prayer, wash your face and the hands to the elbows, rub your headwith water and wash your feet to the ankles, if you are in a state of impurity, wash your whole body. If you are ill on a journey, or you are from nature, or have contact with women, and you find no water, then take for yourselves clean sand or earth (dust) and rub your face and hands.

3 -Bush/Wild meat: To educate the society and ensure good sanitation and protection of food and drink.

Quotation:

Forbidden to you for food are dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine and that which has been killed and strangled or by being gored to death. That which has been partly eaten by wild animals, that which is sacrificed on alters or stone.

4 –Epidemics: To control epidemics and communicable diseases by prohibiting dead bodies and blood (transmission of germs).

Quotation:

They ask you concerned the lawful food for them say “lawful unto you are all things good and pure and what have trained your hunting animals. Eat what they catch for you and pronounce the name of Allah over to and fear Allah, for Allah is swift in taking accounts.

5 -Medication and Hospitalization: Provision made for the establishment of hospitals to restore health and rehabilitate the patients. This ability is described as NIMAH (blessing). Prophet Jesus (ISSA peace be upon him was given the NIMAH as his healing powers demonstrated in those verses. He also prayed for his people in order that they may believe in Allah.

Quotation:

O you who believe guard yourselves well (against disease). If you follow the right guidance no hurt can come to you from those who go astray. The goal of all of you is to Allah and He will inform you of all your deeds (108) Them Allah will say “O Issah, son of Maryam (Jesus) recall my Nimah to you and your mother. Behold I strengthened you with the Holy Spirit so that you did speak to the people in childhood and maturity. Behold I taught you in the Bok and wisdom, the law of the Gospel and behold you made out of clay, as if it were a bird by my permission. And you breathed into it and it became a bird by my permission and you healed those born blind and the lepers by my permission. And behold I restrained the children of Israel (from violence) when you showed them the clear signs then said, “ this is but a manifest magic”.

6 –Stigmatization:Do we have to run away from them. The answer is NO. We should NOT ISOLATE them. Allah commands us in the Holy Quran saying:

Quotation:

It is part of the mercy of Allah that you deal with them gently. Had you been severe and hard-hearted, they would have broken away from about you. So pass over their faults and ask (Allah’s) forgiveness for them, and consult them in the affairs. (Quran 3: 159)

O you who believe let not a group scoff at another group: it may be that the latter are better than the former, nor let some women scoff at other women. It may be that the latter are better than the former. Nor defame one another, nor insult one another by nicknames. How bad is it to insult ones brother after having faith. And whosoever does not repent them such are wrongdoers (Quran 49:111)

7 –Counseling: Allah refers to us as the best of mankind because we enjoin all that is good and forbid all that is evil.

The Holy Quran exemplifies this that all Muslims are brothers and sisters. Let us give them spiritual care, by counseling, praying for and with them as may be necessary to share their feelings. We should reflect on the saying the Holy Prophet (SAS), you are not one who believes unless that what you require or need from others is what you need for yourself.

Quotation:

Hold first together the rope of Allah and be not divided (Quran 3:103)

Hadith (statement of the Holy Prophet): Surely this UMMAH of yours is one community.

The Holy Prophet says the best of you is he/she who is more beneficial to the community. Remain united for the help of Allah.

And certainly we shall test you with something of fear, hunger, loss of health, lives and fruits, but give glad tidings to the patient. Who when afflicted with certainty show truly to Allah we belong and truly to Him we shall return (Quran 2: 155-156).

Thank Allah that our religion Islam enjoins us to assist and support whosoever among the members of the Ummah are afflicted with calamity and cooperate with him/her in alleviating his/her suffering. Allah says “help you one another in righteousness and piety” (Quran 5: 2)
