Presidential Youth Aide commits Young people on Ebola fight

Sierra Leone’s Presidential Youth Aide in the Office of the President, Bai Mamoud Bangura (in photo) has sent a strong challenge to all young people in the country to be vigilant enough to fight against the Ebola virus that is currently ravaging the lives of people. Mr. Bangura was speaking at a press conference held at the Ministry of Youth Affairs Conference Hall in commemoration of the United Nations’ International Youth Day on 12th August 2014. Bai Mamoud pointed out that most of the Ebola deaths are young people that were fighting to save lives; adding that it’s time to place all hands on deck to ensure that the virus is kicked out of the country. He reminded young people that countries like the Congo succeeded in containing the virus, and this should be replicated in Sierra Leone.

The Presidential Youth Aide further said one of the ways to build a better future for the youths is to create a healthy environment.

The day is commemorated under the national theme: “Youth Fight against Ebola”. It was highly commended by the Commissioner of the National Youth Commission, Anthony Koroma, they are commemorating the day with heavy heart. Mr. Koroma pointed out that about 80% of Ebola deaths are youths, and pointed out that nobody should count him or herself out of the fight. “We should use our human and other resources to fight against Ebola,” says the Youth Commission Boss. He admonished the youths to treat the fight with all seriousness and prove that Sierra Leone is a land that they love.

The Youth Affairs Minister, Hon. Alimamy Kamara said while the world is focusing on creating awareness on mental health matters, Sierra Leone focuses on creating awareness on the Ebola virus as a menace that has created in the minds of youth the selfless sense of awareness raising and hygiene practices to avert the deadly effect of the virus. In commemorating the day, the Minister told his audience that his Ministry, the National Youth Commission and other stakeholders will engage in a nationwide media sensitization, taking concerns of the interventions so far taken against the spread of Ebola. “As a Ministry, we are more than ever ready to work with all partners in the fight against Ebola. We must continue to support the youth top embark on massive sensitization, surveillance and reporting,’ he said.

This year’s commemoration, he said gives Sierra Leonean Youths and other stakeholders an expanded platform to continue to fight against Ebola, which has claimed the lives of over 200 people including the youth.

The Minister appealed to youth serving organizations and development partners to work together with the youth to terminate Ebola from Sierra Leone.
