Sierra Leone Embassy registers Sierra Loneans in The Gambia

Launching the country wide registration exercise at the Paradise Suites Hotel at Senegambia over the weekend, which was graced by The Gambian Minister of Foreign Affairs Bubakarr Senghor, the UN Representative to The Gambia Mrs. Ade Lekoetje and renowned Sierra Leonean Doctor Ulric Jones and a cross section of Sierra Leoneans and Gambians Amb . Soulayman Daramy made a clarion call for all his nationals to stand up and be counted and recognized.

He said the registration exercise, amongst others is to enable the Mission provide relevant statistic information for appropriate authorities for developmental exercises. “It is therefore my humble plea to call on all my fellow countrymen and women, boys and girls to kindly participate in this exercise. You cannot afford to be left out. Please come out and be counted and recognized” AMB. Daramy called out.

According to Ambassador Daramy, he was proud and satisfied with the effort and commitment put into the registration exercise so far and that he was equally convinced the objective will be achieved.

With regards the outbreak of the Ebola virus in Sierra Leone, he said “The government is doing everything within its means, to stay on top of the situation” He called for understanding and total awareness of the virus. He put out this request “The government of Sierra Leone as a result of the Ebola outbreak is therefore requesting for assistance from the International committee, Organizations and individuals to combat the Ebola Virus”

Ambassador Daramy on behalf of all Sierra Leoneans in The Gambia commended the expressed thanks and appreciation to President Yahya Jammeh, the government and people of the Gambia for their hospitality. He added that as Sierra Leoneans in a sister country, our desire is to make meaningful contribution in various sectors within the society, that will be of mutual benefit to both countries.

In her statement Deputy Ambassador Saidata Sesay expressed how proud she was of the registration exercise, being an initiative of the newly appointed Ambassador Soulayman Daramy, whom she pointed out, has an Iron lady behind his back H.E Afiju Daramy. She referred to the exercise as an historical occasion. Touching on the unavoidable issue of the Ebola outbreak in her country She said with her eyes impregnated with tears that “once more our nation has been put on the International front line for a situation that is not of our making but we must pray and believe as we pray”

The Gambian Foreign Minister Bubakarr Senghor labeled the exercise a laudable venture, adding that the government of Sierra Leone has indeed demonstrated that they value development in accordance with her Agenda for Prosperity. He said both President Ernest Bai Koroma and President Yahya Jammeh are development oriented. He wished the exercise success.

The Immigration Commissioner Rousi Mendy reiterated that the registration exercise being the first of its kind from a sister nation is indeed a good initiative that will go a long way as both countries share much in common. “Sierra Leoneans are well behaved and law abiding and they do continue to contribute to the socio- economic development of the country.

The Assistant Coordinator of the registration exercise Sorie Koroma in noting some of the importance of the exercise, said that it is development focus, will help in tracking citizens and knowing their skills and profession.

The 13 days long registration exercise in Banjul and its greater areas will cost D200 (two hundred dalasi) a person to complete the registration process and obtain your identity card but the Embassy is subsidizing D100. So each citizen now pays D100. (about LE 10.000) per person. It takes a person about 15 minutes to complete the process.

A statement was also made by the Coordinator of the registration exercise the Consular Officer Sheku Kamara. According to him, an additional seven days will be extended to cover those areas in the provinces.

The launching ceremony of the Registration Exercise was climaxed with traditional drumming and dancing.
