NEC Announces Chieftaincy Election

The Chairperson for the Electoral Commission in Sierra Leone, Dr. Christiana Thorpe has on Thursday 24th September, 2009 announced the conduct of Paramount Chieftaincy Election in all 149 Chiefdoms in the country.

Speaking at the weekly Press Briefing at the Ministry of Information and Communication, the Chairperson made known that 14th October 2009 to 1st November 2009 will serve to review the Chiefdom Councilors lists that serves as voter register for the electoral college that are expected to vote in the various Paramount Chiefs in all the chiefdoms of the country. The NEC boss noted that the 2nd of November to 20th November 2009 will serve as the period for the declaration of rights by aspirants (including objections) nation wide, 25th November 2009 to 13th December 2009 be dates set aside for the conduct of the election in the various chiefdoms.

Enlightening the public on the importance of the Chieftaincy Election; the Minister of Internal Affairs and Local Government Honorable Dauda Kamara said “chieftaincy election is very important to the grass roots people for a way of bringing development in their various localities, and also how they can contribute meaningfully in terms of nation building. Responding also to electoral malpractices asked by journalists to the Minister, he assured that there will be no electoral malpractices by any body and the various elections will be held in a tranquil and peaceful manner, also the Minister promised that no state organs will be meddling into the election as the Local Council Act clearly stated it.

Dr Thorpe said her commission solicits the cooperation of all stakeholders and takes the opportunity to invite interested organizations, Embassies, Civil Society to observe the processes in both elections. It could be noted that the National Electoral Commission and the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development are responsible to man all local elections in the country.
