Parents impressed with BECE performance of Govt School at Moyamba Junction

Moyamba, Nov. 21 (SLENA) –Despite the general poor performance of students in the 2013 BECE exams countrywide, the pupils of the Government Secondary School at Moyamba Junction in the Moyamba District did exceptionally well, SLENA reliably learnt.

According to sources close to the school, 90 candidates took the July examination. Sixty pupils passed five subjects and above while sixteen students passed in all the subjects they took, which ranged from seven to nine subjects.

The principal of the school, J.B. Kanu said his school is a fairly new one and that not until recently when Plan Sierra Leone constructed a six-classroom building for them. He said before now the pupils were housed in make-shift shelters.

He said even though Plan had constructed them the classrooms with electrical appliances, the school lacks a standby generator to make use of those appliances.

Speaking to SLENA, Mr. Kanu appealed to other NGOs or well wishers to help provide the school with a generator. “We shall appreciate other alternative source of power such as solar light, if only government can listen to our plea,” he pleaded.

Highlighting other challenges facing the school, Mr. Kanu said most of his teachers are not on government payroll and only receive monthly stipend from the school, most of them trained and qualified university graduates.
