‘Dissolve cliques and gangs’ … President Koroma tells young people
In an effort to develop sustainable peace among the people of the country, President Ernest Bai Koroma has on November 17 this year told thousands of young people at the Miatta Conference Hall at the Youyi Building in Freetown that they should help the law enforcing bodies by disbanding all cliques and gangs within and around their communities.
President made this statement during the celebration of his one year of his second term in office as President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, organized by the Federation of Young People Sierra Leone [FYPSL] and to celebrate Flames of Hope in appreciation of the good works of President Koroma to young people in this country.
The event attracted a large number of young people from different parts of the country.
President Koroma encouraged the people to influence the transformation of youths who have formed cliques and gangsters, adding that they will hopefully become responsible citizens of the State and will serve their people positively in diverse ways.
He urged the people that their commitment in the transformation of the youths to positive behavioral characters should be taken seriously as a means of putting the country forward.
He expressed thankfulness for what he described as a great show of support and commitment bestowed on him by the Federation of Young People Sierra Leone [FYPSL] and used the platform to tell the young people that he appreciated their appointing him as President of Flames of Hope.
He extended gratitude to the people of Sierra Leone for re-electing him and reaffirmed that the endorsement of the youths of this country took him to State House as President of the Republic of Sierra Leone for both terms.
“We will remain engaged to develop Sierra Leone to a middle income country in the next twenty two years,” he noted, observing that although his Government has made tremendous efforts to address the problems of young people youth unemployment still remains a major issue.
The President confirmed that as a nation we should empower the youths by giving them training and education, which he said was the reason he was creating a Youth Village where young people will be trained in different skills. He also stated that Government has seriously involved young people in the Agricultural Business Centres [ABC] and farming activities.
When told about the general increments of fees in the colleges, he responded that he will engage relevant authorities to address the issue.
He called on the young people to be self-disciplined, law abiding and hardworking for the success of the Agenda for prosperity, while urging them to be united and stop causing mayhem during games and sports meetings.
“How can we develop our athletes and musicians when you always fight yourselves whenever you meet together?,” the President Koroma queried.
He maintained that the success of the country lies in the hands of the young people.
He admonished them to take the celebration as a way of engaging themselves in transforming the country.
The President also urged the young people to work together with the Military and the Police for safer security because as he puts it, “The country’s development does not lie in the hands of Ernest Koroma or the APC but everyone has to put hands on deck.”
In his statement, the Coordinator, Federation of Young People Sierra Leone [FYPSL], Mr. Mohamed Kamara, said the young people of Sierra Leone are very much happy with President Koroma for spending the day with them.
He informed the general public that they appreciate President Koroma because of his hard work and interest in youths.
He described the occasion as a laudable one while assuring the President that they were ready to work with him to ensure that the Agenda for prosperity succeeds.
