Via Defiance… Awareness Times kills IMC in Sierra Leone says SDI executive
The Executive Director of the Society for Democratic Initiatives (SDI), Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai, has accused Awareness Times newspaper of killing the Independent Media Commission (IMC) by deliberately and boastfully defying the Commission.
He made the allegation past Friday while launching the ‘State of the Media Report’ in the conference room of SDI office, Charlotte Street, Freetown.
The Executive Director recalled that on the 26th September, 2012, the IMC banned and fined Awareness Times and two other local media houses, the Independent Observer and the Senator, for indecent and reckless reporting. He informed that Awareness Times publicly challenged the ban and openly blasted the IMC, describing the Commissioners as shameless, disgusting and toothless dogs. Mr. Abdulai accused that Awareness Times publisher, Dr. Sylvia Blyden (in photo), bragged that her newspaper would never comply with the bans and fines and, indeed, it never did. The SDI Executive Director stressed that that singular act of Awareness Times has rendered the IMC impotent and succeeded in killing the Commission.
However, the SDI report quoted the then Acting Editor, Aruna Turay, as saying that the IMC never informed them officially of the bans and fines.
