ABC secretariat post-election educational campaign

The Attitudinal and Behavioural Change (ABC) Secretariat will organise a one month nationwide post-election educational campaign from the 5th January to 5th February 2013, in Kenema the regional headquarter town of the East, Bo the regional headquarter town of the South, Makeni the regional headquarter town of the North and the Western Rural under the theme ‘Democracy, Good Governance and Political Tolerance’. The main aim of this civic education venture is to promote national reconciliation, peace consolidation, political tolerance, and to foster dialogue and conversation to bridge the gap of the political divide in the country after the 2012 elections.

The Executive Director ABC Secretariat Dr Ivan Ajibola Thomas said that Sierra Leone has been exhibiting positive attitude and behaviour in our socio-cultural and political landscape which will ensure both economic and political stability the yardstick for socio-economic growth and development. The ABC Secretariat Executive Director believes that inculcating and reinforcing the positive values and principles of good governance and political tolerance in a nascent democracy like Sierra Leone will create the platform for national cohesion, reconciliation and peaceful coexistence

Dr Ivan Ajibola Thomas advocates for the reintroduction of civic education in our educational institutions in which pupils will be prepared to be good citizens in the country stressing that through this educational enterprise, students  will be  enlightened of the democratic principles good governance,  and freedom and responsibility, rights and obligations, nationalism and patriotism. During this educational campaign town hall meetings and workshops will be conducted targeting various stakeholders in the regions for a conversation on the need for positive national consciousness and unity.

The National Coordinator and Second-in-Command Madam Nanette Thomas of the Attitudinal and Behavioural Change (ABC) Secretariat said the destiny of the nation depends on the demonstration of positive attitude and behaviour of transparency and accountability, loyalty to the state, honesty and impartiality in the governance of the country. Madam Thomas emphasized that adherence to these values is key to individual and societal change maintaining that the agenda for prosperity will only fully actualised within the scope of a positive value system.

ABC’s National Coordinator Nanette Thomas disclosed that the secretariat will continue to utilise the community and institutional based approach in the fight against negative attitude in the country. The Attitudinal and Behavioural Change (ABC) Secretariat will work with major community stakeholders, educational and political organisations and good governance institutions will be targeted for the civic educational campaign on democratic principles and political tolerance.
