Call to action: civil society 2 millions signature campaign
Call to action: civil society 2 millions signature campaign calling for the immediate reversal of government withdrawal of subsidy on all petroleum products subsequently resulting to more than 20% fuel price increase in the country
Following the press release issued on the 5th May 2011 by COJA in consultation with Civil Society Consultative Forum calling on the government of Sierra Leone to immediately address the acute economic hardship particularly the momentous fuel price escalation and youth unemployment in the country, members of the forum in their 36th session held in Freetown on the 7th may 2011 unanimously resolved to set up a campaign team. Key mandate of this team is to solicit at least 2 million signatures from the general public in the entire country to petition the simultaneous increment in the price of fuel. Pursuant to its mandate the team, has prepared a petition letter to be signed by the entire members of the public. All our district representatives have been issued this letter and will be contacting every Sierra Leonean above 18 years to sign on, in solidarity with members of the forum as stated in the call to action.
The need for setting up this team is to forestall the socioeconomic, security and political implications foreseen. For instance the gains already made in the Free health care will be greatly affected as result of high cost of transportation already affecting our people especially in the rural areas. Equally it will cause serious adverse impact on all agricultural produce in the situation where farmers are unable to afford the high cost of transportation, to mention but a few.
Members of the forum are counting on the support of the general public, if this campaign is to achieve its desired goal. For instance, in this struggle the team will be meeting market women, teachers, youth groups, students etc for their cooperation. In this respect the forum wishes to reiterate that such support from the general public is crucial for the success of our resolve on this matter
