Nigeria, South Africa, Egypt gets away ties

The 1996 gold medallists Nigeria, South Africa and Egypt are all drawn to face their counterparts in the 2nd round of the men’s qualifiers for the 2012 Olympic Football tournament away from home in their first leg encounters slated for first weekend in June.

The Confederation of African Football acting Secretary General Hicham El Amrani conducted the draws at the CAF Headquarters in Cairo, Egypt on Wednesday 13 April 2011.

Participating countries witnessed the ceremony including Gordon Savic the FIFA Head of world cup and Olympics qualifiers.

The match dates for the last-16 round will be played on 3-5 June 2011 for the first-leg matches, 17-19 June 2011 for the return-leg matches.

Egypt who eliminated Botswana 3-2 will face their Arab counterparts Sudan, while the eventual winners of the tie between Liberia and Ivory Coast are up against Congo Brazzaville.

The quarter final will be organised by a group system, as the last eight will be divided into two groups. A new qualifying system will be applied for the next stage of the championship, as three teams are going to represent CAF at the London 2012 Olympics with a fourth African team meeting a team from Asia in a play-off match to be held on 12 April 2012 in London.

The 16th team to qualify will only be known on 20 April 2011, as FIFA has postponed the return-leg match between Liberia and Côte d’Ivoire until this date, in order to allow the Ivorian team to leave its territory to play the match.

The draw result is as follows:

Algeria v Zambia
Morocco v RD Congo
Congo v the winner of the Côte d’Ivoire/Liberia match (20 April)
Gabon v Mali
Sudan v Egypt
Benin v South Africa
Tunisia v Senegal
Tanzania v Nigeria
